What to do when online classes affect your child’s health – Towards A Better Life

Source: What to do when online classes affect your child’s health – Towards A Better Life

There was a time when my wife, who loves our son too much like every mother does, wanted to open up a school at home for our child. That dream turned true after the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world. But, the pandemic has adversely affected almost every sphere of our lives, including education. Children today are being taught their curriculum online.

But, is it good for the child? The answer is no it is not

In fact, studying from home has forced every child to miss school, which is still he most crucial part of their lives, . Teachers teaching in a classroom full of kids is a thing of the past. Every child is stuck with the new reality of ‘online classes.’ However, children’s physical and mental health are suffering as their screen usage increases.

Excessive screen time, according to Dr. Sudha. B, Senior Consultant Neonatologist Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, might cause the following difficulties in your child: Dry eyes as a result of digital eye strain; Headache; Neck ache; Disruptions in sleep; A shorter attention span; Behavioral changes such as impatience, refusals, and excessive arguing; and Impaired socialisation abilities.

Kerala State Education Minister V. Sivankutty also addressed the state Assembly on Monday that online lessons are harming schoolchildren’s health.

Sivankutty stated, citing the findings of a survey conducted by the State Council of Education Research and Training, that 36% of students experience headaches and neck pain, while 28% have eye trouble. He went on to say that parents should be made aware of the dangers of using digital devices.

Dr. Sudha suggested a couple of tips for parents to help children cope up with screen time stress.

Don’t let screens disrupt your children’s sleep: When youngsters use devices close to bedtime, blue light can disrupt sleep patterns and circadian rhythms. Turn off and remove screens from bedrooms at least one hour before bedtime.

Never overlook digital eye strain: Digital eye strain symptoms include dry eyes, itching, and a burning sensation in the eyes. Severe eye strain can result in headaches as well as refractive problems such as myopia and astigmatism. When you give your eyes a break, they will improve. Allow your youngster to follow the 20-20-20 rule, which allows his or her eyes to rest intermittently:Make it a point for your child to take a 20-second break every 20 minutes and stare at something 20 feet away.

Control the changes in behaviour: Children are becoming irritable as a result of excessive screen time and less interaction with family and friends. Poor attention span, not listening when talked to, constant fighting, and throwing age-inappropriate tantrums are just a few of the signs. To avoid this, parents should engage in fascinating and beneficial interactions with their children that spark their curiosity. Encourage your child to participate in extracurricular activities such as athletics, music, and art.

Handling screen time – Don’t ever use screens as pacifiers, to avoid tantrums of the child. Begin digital disciplining for the entire family with a tiny step, such as not eating while staring at phones or televisions. Weekend noneducational screen time should be limited. Attempt to have screen-free weekends. Technology isn’t without its benefits, but every parent should learn the art of digital disciplining.

Be The Change!

Let me tell you a story today.

Once upon a time, there was a little boy who loved eating sugar.  He would chew on his sugar granules throughout the day. His mother was worried that this excessive gorging on sugar would take a toll on his  health. She tried everything from gently coaxing him out of this habit to scaring him to hiding the containers, but to no avail. Finally, she decided to take him to his idol, Mahatma Gandhi, so that the great man could talk some sense to her child.

So the next day, she started on the journey with her son. When she finally reached his Ashram, she saw that hundreds of people were waiting to meet the great man. When finally their turn came, the mother explained to  Gandhi the whole situation, and requested him to talk to her son. Gandhi smiled at her and said, “Please come back in 2 weeks time and I shall speak with your son”. She was confused, but she left without any protest.

Two weeks passed, she went back to the Ashram with her son and this time, Gandhi immediately spoke to her son. Curious, she asked Gandhi why he hadn’t spoken to her son the last time they had come. Gandhi smiled and said, “Well, two weeks ago, I too was eating too much of sugar”. He couldn’t preach what he didn’t practice.

It’s easy to complain about the world and other people, but if you cannot implement the changes in your own life, then you have no right to complain. Don’t be a hypocrite!

We do not have control over others. We cannot change others, only ourselves. If you want to see some change in the world, you must start with yourself. Every significant change that has ever happened in this world has been the result of changes which began at individual level. Revolutions have happened because one person had the courage to stand up for what they believed in  and didn’t wait for others to take action. Now, you don’t have to pick up your megaphone and yell for a revolution if that’s not something you want to do. Just be an embodiment of what you believe in and you might be able to move others with your belief too.

But in order for things to change, you have to change. Don’t just complain how this world sucks. Be the Change!

English Vocabulary Expansion!

Hello Friends 🙂 You all know importance of a good vocabulary as writers. I come from a country where English is the second language. I started learning English quite late as my courses in school were taught mostly in my mother tongue Hindi. When I realized importance of a sound vocabulary–I started learning new words. […]

English Vocabulary Expansion!

This is one of my earliest posts here which resembles an introduction to Weekly Features. It has a link to vocabulary.com . Thankfully, i am still playing on that site regularly. I entered its ‘Hall of Fame’ once in 2017 and stayed there for about an year. I was a top monthly scorer for three months in a row in 2017: an achievement i am proud of. Do you have any such sites to recommend? Please leave a comment if you do.

Space Logic!

1. I used to be very active, first on Madphilosophers.com and then on The Couch Forum. I always think about the space.

2. All or a lot of my content created with the ID @thinkerv0 was deleted. I really don’t know if more content by some other people was deleted as well.

3. After about four and half years of its existence only 38% of its space has been used. The rules regarding not posting pictures or multimedia were because we always have limited space. Yet: if we have some really interested members we can look for extension of space once we reach 100% usage: which doesn’t seem like happening for many years at current rate. Therefore: there’s no limit on number posts or images or even multimedia posting as far as I am concerned. We obviously expect honesty, integrity and harmlessness from each other in our content.

4. All of our activity combined on this forum is a fraction of web activity in the world. A tiny fraction. The logic that people need to keep up if we frequently discuss here or elsewhere is futile. On such forums: you always have at least one listener: admin. On your blogs: they might just be liking your posts without reading: well, not all of them, off course. Here, since admins act as hosts and care about what is said on forum as it has to maintain its reputation, decorum and respectability : they remain alert and vigilante; they read each and every word you write. This becomes a very positive loop for participating members and works much better for your personal blogs as well.

5. Post Script: I have made 200 posts here on Blogger’s World. Thankyou everyone. Especially: Pam, Sandeept, Oneta, Colettes, Vicki and recently active members! I also received a notification about number of likes here on a single day which was a new record being in excess of 110. It’s all very important. Thanks for your time, energy and support. It is really valuable.

Perigee and Apogee!

1. I had a five rupees plate in Deendayal rasoi after which I took a picture. The picture was uploaded to instagram. I wanted to upload another picture which I took near Swami Pranavananda Vedic Research Institute: a kingfisher perched atop an electric poll. The image was deleted it seems.

2. It took me an hour to sweep and dustup library and visit Deendayal Rasoi. Rotis were not available today. It completes my 17th day there.

3. I have been seeing uncle and aunt regularly. A car with ‘Bada Malahara Youth Congress’ was seen thrice. I should have stopped by Maria Mata, entered inside to mourn but…there were too many people. It was Saroj Shukla who told me the news of getting third merit in district in class 12th board examinations. What was the score? 89.3. (.5 less than 89.8 which was score in class 8th board examinations.)

Vandana Shukla told me that my name was published in Dainik Bhaskar in class 8th. She told me that I had scored among 200000 students of my age group. Ah, dapper! By the time Saroj Shukla told me about my name being published in a magazine as the third ranker in class 12th- I needed to prepare for Resonance where I got selected primarily on the basis of twelfth class percentage and misery deepened. They both were proud of my achievements. Later i fell too short and needed to fight demons.

4. I enquired vocabulary.com by writing some emails: how many people was I playing against when I scored first rank consistently for three months in September, October and November in 2017. Was it 10000? They said it was more than that. It was enough to tell me that I was at least one in a million. Plus assurance of Rick Rosner about the definition of intellect used in designing Noesis tests. Now i didn’t need those old standards: class 8th and 12th. I can maintain a first rank there but wouldn’t Jhonson O’Connors turn in his grave by knowing that i create only 1000 rupees per month. I should go to MIT. Earn a Ph. D. Run some marathons in Europe. Work part time and settle either in Norway or Korea. But it seems it might be too late for that. What a waste of life this has been. Everything unclear. Was it not for Jhonson O’Connors: I would have remained uncertain about my intelligence. There are many dimensions of intelligence but verbal intelligence is easiest to work upon for some people. PC is a role model right now. Claire seems to have disappeared. That is what Bada Malahara Youth Congress plate on front of a vehicle reminds me of: her telling me about my achievement. It was Vandana in class 8th and Saroj in class 12th. Cashew and Shankhpushpi were available in class 8th but disappeared in 12th. I was left with marks on my back. Marks of having carried heavy bags to tuitions on bicycle. Aditya Saxena-who circulated my name as his ideal student after my results came won’t keep me as his assistant. Maria Mata Convent High School didn’t give me a teaching job with petty excuses. Parents couldn’t give me a 5000 rupees per month as pocket money. This world isn’t what it seems to be. Merit isn’t supported.

5. Completed reading 30 pages from ‘Aditi and other deities in Veda’ by M. P. Pandit.

6. I read a tweet by Subramanian Swamy yesterday: he used phrase ‘sans fear’. That might mean ‘without fear.’ I don’t know if it was polite to ask him what he meant by PC. I was curious because I am playing with one PC on vocabulary.com and Swamy wants to send one to prison. Curiouser and curiouser.

2. We are using “Samagra Siksha” workbook issued by Madhya Pradesh State Education Centre Bhopal. Edition 2020-2021.

3. Page number 293: question number 3rd is erroneous. The typo should be corrected. The question is not about the river(Narmada) but about rocks which are present on its way at Bhedaghat as becomes apparent upon reading the last three sentences of the passage. Anyone who is associated with aforesaid board should make note of this correction if it hasn’t already been reported and update it in future editions. Thanks.
