Chauvin to learn black lives matter in jail; but it’s only 40 years he is facing

The US police is yet to learn that Black lives matter as seen in the recent killing of a Black man during a traffic stop. But, justice has been served in the case against the former Minneapolis officer whose actions in the death of George Floyd sparked massive protests.

Derek Chauvin, who killed Floyd last year by kneeling on his neck last year, has been convicted of all counts against him. Chauvin is facing just 40 years in prison, although it should have death or a life sentence without parole for all the pain the US suffered because of the crime he committed. According to Islamic principles, it is death for a person who kills another because not only black but all lives matter. Islam also says that the crime of a person who takes one life is as if he has killed all humans. But, sadly Chauvin is facing neither life nor the death sentence, which is given in rare cases.

However, the US police has still not understood that black lives matter as white police officer recently allegedly shot a young Black motorist to death during a traffic stop in a Minneapolis suburb.

The fatal shooting of Daunte Wright triggered three nights of protests and civil unrest.

Minnesota  authorities have charged with second-degree manslaughter Kim Potter, the Brooklyn Center police officer who was arrested on April 14 for killing 20-year-old Wright during an April 11 traffic stop.

The incident occurred amid the trial of Chauvin.

The maximum sentence he could get is 40 years for second-degree unintentional murder, 25 years for third-degree murder and 10 years for second-degree manslaughter. Those sentences would likely be served concurrently, not consecutively, since they are all for the same crime.

The judge in the trial canceled his bail and said Chauvin would be sentenced in eight weeks.

Black Lives Matter: When will US police understand?

Looks like the US police will never understand that Black lives matter, even after what the country went through following the 2020 murder of George Floyd.

A white police officer has now been taken into custody for shooting a young Black motorist to death during a traffic stop in a Minneapolis suburb.

The incident occurred amid the ongoing trial of former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin, who was last year charged with murder and manslaughter in the May 2020 death of Floyd.

Potter, a 26-year veteran of the police department, resigned from her post on Tuesday after Wright’s death sparked protests. Police Chief Tim Gannon also tendered his resignation Tuesday, after telling reporters one day earlier that Potter appeared to have mistaken her gun for her Taser during the traffic stop.

Gannon has said police video shows Potter apparently drew her hand gun instead of her Taser by mistake when she opened fire on Wright, after he broke away from a fellow officer and climbed back into his car.

Wright’s family members and their lawyer have rejected that notion that an accident was to blame for Wright’s death.

The Washington County Attorney’s Office said Potter was acting as her partner’s field training officer at the time of the shooting.

“Certain occupations carry an immense responsibility and none more so than a sworn police officer,” Imran Ali, assistantcriminal division chief and director of the major crimes unit for the County Attorney’s Office, said in the statement.

“We will vigorously prosecute this case and intend to prov ethat Officer Potter abrogated her responsibility to protect the public when she used her firearm rather than her Taser,” he said. “Her action caused the unlawful killing of Mr. Wright, and she must be held accountable.”

Wright was shot on Sunday after being pulled over for an expired automobile registration, and officers discovered there was a warrant out for his arrest, according to the official police account of the confrontation.

In police video of the incident, Potter can be heardshouting, “Holy shit, I just shot him,” after she fires a singleshot that struck Wright in the chest.

To convict Potter of second-degree manslaughter under Minnesota law, prosecutors must show that she was “culpably negligent” and took an “unreasonable risk” in her actions against Wright. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

Lawyer Benjamin Crump, who represents Wright’s family, stated that the charge fell short of meeting a greater need for police reform in the United States.

Crump said, “While we appreciate that the district attorney is pursuing justice for Daunte, no conviction can give the Wright family their loved one back. This was no accident. This was an intentional, deliberate, and unlawful use of force. Driving while Black continues to result in a death sentence.”

Ramzan blogging party

Ramzan Mubarak to all, irrespective of religion. I love you all as my own.

The month of fasting once again brings us closer to the Almighty God and each other through caring and sharing. God revealed a part of the Holy Quran to Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.) for the first time in the month of Ramzan and so Muslims all over the world celebrate the anniversary of that event in this month. Besides the many health benefits it carries, the fasting makes us feel the pain of those who don’t even have food to eat. We also pay the Zakat (compulsory poor due) in the month of Ramzan to help the less privileged fulfill the basic needs of life.

The fasting

We all know that fasting is best cleanser for our systems. But, besides the many health benefits it carries, the fasting makes us feel the pain of those who don’t even have food to eat. A day of fasting can have a positive effect on our body, mind, and spirit. Just think how much benefit a month of fasting would bring. What has amazed me over the years is that there are non-Muslims who give value to the fasting part of this Holy month and fast for at least a day or two. Muslims also get together with their friends from other religions and host an Iftar party where we forget all differences and break our fasts. May God bless us all with Peace and good understanding.

Five times a day prayers

Even Muslims who find it hard to say their five times a day compulsory prayer offer those prayers in this month to achieve closeness with God because these prayers are a pre-requisite to the acceptance of our fasts. Moreover, God promises to increase the reward of every good deed we do in the month of Ramazan as compared to that if it was done in some other month.

One of the most important part of the Muslim prayers is the Surah Fateha which starts with the words Alhamdolillahe Rabbil alamin (Praise be to Allah the Lord of the worlds). It is noteworthy that we say Lord of the worlds and not just Muslims, as we all have been created by the same God who belongs to all of us, irrespective of race and religion.

As a pillar of Islam, zakat is a form of obligatory charity that has the potential to ease the suffering of millions. With the literal meaning of the word being ‘to cleanse,’ Muslims believe that paying zakat purifies, increases and blesses the remainder of their wealth.

Let us take care of each other, especially the poor, and also pray for each other’s welfare. May Allah take better care of you and your family. May He also gives us a permanent solution to the Covid-19 pandemic.

I wish I could host an Iftar party for you all, but think of this blog party as the same where instead of food I invite you to share your comments.

Covid-19 should not stop us from dealing with another key issue: Climate change – Towards A Better Life

Covid-19 started in 2020 and does not seem to end soon. The problems it has created also seem to have taken away our attention from climate change, which is another major issue that is affecting our heath.

However, that should not happen because even after we have found a solid solution for the pandemic, climate change will remain.

What can you do?

Most of us are not scientists to deal with climate change, but you can still do something at your level to control it. I believe that doing at least the following two things can help.

1) Shut down that AC: That is what I tell my son who loves switching the air-conditioner on whenever he feels hot. Honestly, I just do it to cut down my power bills. But, I also think that it is not only my child but also other people who put on the AC when they feel hot without knowing that doing so also increases global warming. It is like a cycle. Actually, ACs consume large amounts of electricity, and the fluorocarbons they use as refrigerants deplete the ozone layer and contribute to global warming. So please, shut down the AC and if you can’t do that at least limit its use.
2) Let your computer sleep or close the monitor: Apart from limiting your use of the AC and electricity you should always shut down the monitor whenever you take a break while working. I am saying this as allowing the monitor to remain on and not putting your computer on sleep mode can also contribute to global warming. I always close my monitor even if I have to go to the washroom.

Here are two articles I have curated on the subject that should increase your knowledge about climate change and help you deal with it in your daily lives.

I CAN’T BREATHE: Minneapolis police veteran says kneeling on Floyd’s neck was not at all required – Life And Crime Stories

The world knows that a black man died while saying ‘ I can’t breathe’ last year after a former U.S officer knelt on his neck for several minutes, but the head of the Minneapolis Police Department’s homicide division has now testified that it was an act that was not at all required.

Lt. Richard Zimmerman gave testimony on April 2 during the trial of formfficer Derek Chauvin who was charged with murder of George Floyd, saying that kneeling on Floyd ‘s neck while he was handcuffed and lying on his stomach was top-tier, deadly force and “totally unnecessary.”

Zimmerman testified at Derek Chauvin’s murder trial, saying, “If your knee is on a person’s neck, that can kill him.”

He added when someone is handcuffed behind their back, “your muscles are pulling back … and if you’re laying on your chest, that’s constricting your breathing even more.

Zimmerman also gave testimony that once Floyd was handcuffed, he saw “no reason for why the officers felt they were in danger — if that’s what they felt — and that’s what they would have to feel to be able to use that kind of force.”

Zimmerman, replied, “Absolutely,”, when prosecutor Matthew Frank asked.“So in your opinion, should that restraint have stopped once he was handcuffed and thrown on the ground?”

He said he has received use-of-force training annually — as all officers do — since joining the city force in 1985.

He also said he has never been trained to kneel on someone’s neck if they’re handcuffed behind their back and in the prone position.

Zimmerman said, “Once you secure or handcuff a person, you need to get them out of the prone position as soon as possible because it restricts their breathing,” , adding “you need to turn them on their side or have them sit up.”

He also gave testimony that even if an ambulance has been called, it is the duty of police to provide care for a person in distress.

Capital murder charge filed against mother accused of drugging Jason Marks, 6, to death for insurance money – Life And Crime Stories

Source: Capital murder charge filed against mother accused of drugging Jason Marks, 6, to death for insurance money – Life And Crime Stories

Money is important, but what would you say if a woman kills her child for insurance money.

Ashley Marks has been charged with capital murder after she allegedly killed her 6-year-old son with a toxic mix of methamphetamine and cocaine for insurance money, according to Harris County court records.

25-year-old appeared before a judge on April 1 in Harris County court   where prosecutors read a  charge of capital murder against her in the death of  June 27 death of Jason Sanchez Marks, according to court records.

Prosecutors say Marks allegedly killed the boy to collect on two life insurance policies totaling $100,000.

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences ruled the cause of death as the toxic effects of chlorpheniramine, dextromethorphan and diphenhydramine with methamphetamine. The agency said the boy’s manner of death was homicide.

Prosecutors have accused Marks of causing Jason’s death by administering those drugs.

According to the medical examiner, the boy died at his grandfather’s house.

Marks is due to make her first appearance in court before Judge Robert Johnson in the 177th criminal court on April 5.

Age is just a number; God owns time

Source: Age is just a number; God owns time – Life And Crime Stories

Here is an article from my WordPress friend who owns the blog Hill Study Center. In the article, the author  discusses the old saying ‘Age is just a number,’, which according to me means no matter how old you are you can still enjoy your life without hurting the feelings of others.

The best part  of the Hill Study Center article is where the author asks who owns time? and then says God, the creator of heaven and earth. Even Islam universally views time as created. It is God’s handiwork which, like all Creation, is under the command of God, who Muslims call ‘Allah,’ the one who is worthy of all worship and praise.

God is not bound by the constraints of time, as He is eternal. The Holy Quran says the Almighty God just commands “Be” and it is. This is how He also brought Jesus Christ into being, although Mary remained pure and untouched by men throughout her life.

And although I have earlier said that age does not matter, my advice is to learn to give proper value to time and act your age, in order to maintain your dignity. It is best to take aging gracefully while enjoying life at the same time.

May God bless us all with good understanding so that we may learn the value of time and make the best use of it  for this world and the hereafter.
