HELP! Bloggers World needs YOU!!!

Okay, that may sound a bit over-dramatic but the truth is that while we had a few awesome days filled with extraordinarily rocking stats in April and May, June has been a bit dismal.

We had over a 1000 views in both April and May and yet in June not even half that number has been achieved. I am sure you would know that the number of posts directly translates into views.
We’ve had some wonderful times and celebrations these past days. New features have been introduced. Lots of new members have joined in. We even won the third spot in the Blogger Awards.

And yet participation on the forum is at it’s lowest ever. I don’t see any of you sharing your posts, or giving feedback to others. Much loved weekly features have had to be shut down for lack of participation.

C’mon bloggers, sip a cool drink to beat the heat and inject some life into this forum. Be more active, share posts, write more, give feedback, solicit feedback. If there’s anything that I can do to help, please do tell me. For otherwise, this forum cannot survive without you!

So tell me what is it that’s keeping you away? Tell me what we can do to be better, to get you back on the forum?

To be honest, I’m afraid to break the rules. There seems to be many rules and I don’t have time to read them all and follow them plus do my own blog. I wrote a feature only one time and was told I did it wrong. (I had read all the rules that time and actually did it right).

  Cathy, I remember that and had even apologised for the confusion abt the scheduling. Don’t know what more I could have done. If that’s what keeping you away, I’m actually saddened.
  Rules are there for a reason. In fact, on this very forum some people like having rules. So I have to maintain a balance to make sure I please everyone. 🙂
  You wouldn’t believe the amount of time I spend at the backend just cleaning up and organising the posts. And the rules are shared time and again, for everyone’s convenience. Having said that, I am quite flexible about bending the rules once in a while.
  Please let the rules not deter you from posting. If you go wrong, you go wrong. Big deal! We’ll correct it and next time you’ll know what to do right 🙂

    Writing, for me is freeing. To have to follow rules is just too stifling for me, personally. I’m not sure if others feel this way but when I read all those rules I just said to myself, “No thanks”. I want to express myself without having to keep checking if I’m doing it right. That’s just my own opinion.

I’ll confess that I find posting to Bloggers World a little confusing. The way I understand it we have to write new content for the blog and cannot re-blog content that we post to our own blog…If this is incorrect please let me know because I am happy to re-blog my more popular posts. I also blog with the survivors network which allows me re-blog .

  You can share your own posts here for more visibility.
  For the features on BW, yes, you ideally should write new content, but that too you can re-blog or re-post from your blog too. That way, you get new content for your own blog as well. Besides, a little variety is the spice of blogging life. 😉 🙂
  If nothing else, I’m sure you can participate by giving feedback to the posts here. 🙂
  Features like 13 words story don’t even require much time. Please do give this a thought. If you need help, feel free to give me a shout out. 🙂

Piyusha, you’ve done a great job of creating a community and organizing a blog that will be helpful to writers. That’s powerful and you should pat yourself on the back for that.

The problem is few new people are actually visiting the blog. Not the writers, new people. People who want to consume the content.

Many will beg to write for BW if BW gets them attention and traffic. The posts here do not generate significant amounts of traffic when they are posted.

If you want more traffic to BW the answer is not more content (at least, not that alone.)

I post infrequently and irregularly. My blog gets a decent amount of traffic (3,506 unique visitors to date this year). Not enough for a blog to make money, but enough I get a few comments here and there. Enough to motivate me to post occasionally. Good enough for a hobby blog.

61% of my visits this year have come through search – almost all through Google Search. 29% of my visits have come from WordPress.com – either the reader or via email notification. The rest come from a variety of sources.

There is a procedure for creating content that will generate visits. If you apply it – even going back and updating old posts – Google will send you traffic every day. More WordPressers will find you through tags.

Traffic is the key to getting more writers. Choosing keywords and tags that people are looking for is the key to getting more traffic.

Does that make sense?

  I wish I could take credit for creating this. But, nope! this is the brainchild of some super intelligent people like @kristinavanhoos @sashay909 @wynstep @drmegsorick @pamkirst2014 and some others who did the August 2015 Blogging 101 course together. I’ve only inherited it and been appointed Admin recently. Some of them like Kristina or Catherine aren’t even active now. Thanks on behalf of all of them. 🙂
  Thanks, Kevin. It does make sense but the problem is the tags being used are inane and meaningless. Things like ‘www’ or such clutter up instead of helping. I’ve had to clear up tags like wanderingsoul (that’s my blog name, have no idea why someone else used that as a tag) or badly spelled and half written words as tags. You can use any tags as long as they are relevant to the post.

      maybe where all bloggers come together and have fun making new friends, participating in new events or learning new things. It’s benefited me a lot and I know it would benefit others too, especially new bloggers. Maybe that’s what it is. A place suited for new bloggers more, for them to make new connections. It’s like the community pool but better and bigger.

Okay I’m going to be very honest and open here, so please note that I say this all with love and respect for everyone here. I’m just trying to help!

I don’t know how to say this without sounding selfish so my apologies in advance, but the reason I am not as involved is because I just lack an interest in certain features. The photography one or the short story one or the poetry ones just don’t interest me at all. It’s no one’s fault and I’m not trying to stop y’all from doing it, but that’s my reason. Maybe it just has to do with style as I’m 20 and most of you are middle age or older… Also I’m not a very creative person!

As far as feedback, I love giving it when there’s something specific to critique and perhaps we all need to work on that when we share posts. Is there a certain thing we want feedback on? If yes, ask for it. Because I kind of find it silly just to reply with “nice writing” every time…so sometimes I don’t say anything.

As for the rules, as I’ve seen a few people mention, they’re not complicated, but they do require effort. I think some people just want to drop their links and leave, and we’re aiming for more participation (and order to make it easier for the mods). That being said, perhaps consider loosening the laws? Asking a limited number of people to regularly commit to writing new, topical posts on top of maintaining their own blogs is running dry apparently. I’ve done a few guest features and whatnot, but a lot of the times it’s because I have an idea that I think would be better suited for posting here on BW than on my own blog. I’m happy to contribute when I have ideas, but a lot of the time I don’t and I’m sorry. Maybe we should consider allowing people to post their old blog posts or something?

I do have a few ideas for new features. The first is Would You Rather. Each week someone comes up with a WYR (related to blogging or not) and people can comment their answers. It’s easy and inclusive.
Another idea is to share little stories. People can take turns prompting a specific thing like “Tell us about your first kiss” or “what was your best blogging moment” or “tell us about your best friend”… just little stories and anecdotes for us to bond over and comment on.

Also, we need to do some advertising and get new eyes. I frequent the Community Pool every week and I think a lot of people there would enjoy BW. Next Monday someone should go spread the word!

  @iamdonovan Everything you said makes complete sense and I actually find myself agreeing with you on a lot of points. The Rules aren’t complicated at all. And yes, they do require effort. It’s strange that people are complaining about that. Everything, from English grammar to Life itself, has rules.
  What I think is lacking is a sense of ‘giving’.
  We need new eyes too and that’s why I have been asking people to reblog, share the posts, invite their friends. As for the Community Pool, I’ve done that too, quite a few times. It’s on everyone to do it on their own. If I as much as ask people to share feedback, they take it as pressurizing. There should be a sense of wanting to share and contribute. If everyone insists on wanting to promote their own blog only, this would become a dumping ground for links and not the community that we are trying to foster here.
  
  And, I don’t think you’re not creative. I just think you haven’t explored/discovered that side of you yet 🙂

Piusha, I, too, find blogging to this site confusing. Can you tell us specifically how to share a post that we’ve already published to our blog. I can’t seem to figure that out. I launched a new challenge today, https://musinwithsusan.com/2016/06/22/macro-moments-week-1/, and would love to use this forum as a way to get more exposure if that is permissible. I ’m hoping that fellow photography lovers will join in this challenge and that those who admire photography as art will stop by.

Why not let the forum just ebb and flow and trust the members to follow their own inclination to comment on what others post.       That’s the problem, Susan! It’s not ebbing and flowing. It’s actually dying.
      People use it as a dumping ground to share their links without even one line of an encouraging feedback for others posts.
      That’s why I had to encourage and urge for everyone to give more feedback. Blogging should be fun. But it’s also a community. And communities can only thrive on give and take. Giving feedback is fun too. It’s my job to try and draw everyone out to comment more, to participate more. I’m doing just that 🙂 Don’t see why anyone should take pressure about it.
      And you actually take that effort on your blog. You go through all that trouble. For the forum, it seems as if the members feel all that effort is not worth it. That’s the impression I am getting from some of the comments. And, that’s sad. Because a lot of us here have gained tremendously as bloggers from this very forum. And I know for sure others would too, only if they see it as something more than just another ‘blog’. The sense of belonging and ownership is missing here , I feel.

I think I agree with most of the comments here and especially relate strongly with what kevin has written. I know how many times you and Rashmi have tagged me but participation for me has been difficult because for obvious reasons my own blog will triumph first and writing here doesn’t get me the traffic that I want. I have seen it through all the posts that I have included here with links to my post. Secondly time is already a factor. I barely have time to dedicate to my own blog, and I have two of them. So it’s very difficult to follow the rules here.

  That’s the problem, I think. People think this a traffic generating platform rather than a community where they need to contribute and help others selflessly. If it isn’t generating traffic it’s because everyone is only sharing their own posts without visiting actually others. That’s the problem, as I see and gather from everyone’s comments. Don’t know how I can sort that one, though.

@piyushavir I wouldn’t say that rules are problem. When I had joined it was a buzzing platform. I’m sure like you there were other hard working people on board running the show. Although I don’t know what was the issue but after exit of one of admin slowly the activity on the forum came down. I don’t it’s about posting rather it’s involvement of members. on any platform it’s give and take -you contribute something and you get something back, not necessarily in same quantum. so problem is not really enough posts it’s about interest and involvement of members.

    @piyushavir that’s what I feel the issue is looking at low interest level. I had posted links to my post few times but not more than two or three bloggers responded. It’s not about getting traffic to your blog only, it’s about interest and involvement. you’re doing great job; it’s sheer hard work which many of us don’t visualize. I’m sorry I don’t have any specific input to help you out with. I just wrote what I sincerely felt.

@piyushavir I think maybe you’re trying to recreate her what other forums like Insecure Writer’s Support Group on Facebook does. That is a noble goal but here’s the problem… To use IWSG as an example, the members post a question, ask for feedback and discussion ensues. There isn’t any kind of pressure to create content for the feed. The feed becomes the content. And it’s awesome.

@iamdonovan said it well, there are features that not everyone is interested in. Even creative writing isn’t that popular. We are being forced to create content here when we could be spending that time on our own blogs. That IS why we are all blogging after all. The connections we form with followers to our personal blogs IS the community, it has to be our primary focus. So if BW takes second place, that is the natural order of things. It doesn’t mean we are selfish or not generous with our time… there’s just only so much time to give.

And @fictionalkevin is right, there has to be a benefit to being involved here. It can’t be just giving on the part of the contributors. All these features could easily be handled through the contributor’s own blog. For example, the 13 words story could be a weekly challenge on your blog. I write creative writing tips on my blog almost every Wednesday. The photography aficionados could do a weekly photo challenge. @sashay909 has the limerick poetry challenge. You see what I’m saying?

Let us know what your vision is for BW. What is the goal here? Maybe we aren’t all on the same page!

  Of course, it isn’t selfish at all that personal blogs take preference. And I don’t expect people to give it priority over their blogs but just saying that over time the interest has waned. When I took over as admin, the stats had improved considerably so wondering what went wrong suddenly this month . Maybe over time the novelty wore off. Or just one of those things where slowly people got busy and it just happened at the same time. Even I personally am not as involved as I was earlier. We used to have at least 3 to 4 entries for 13 words , now not even one is there. Its things like those that left me wondering what is going wrong and where. Is it something we can rectify or is it just something that so happened. From what the responses are , it looks like it just so happened that for most people other things came along. Like even with me, for example , slowly other things like my novel happened and I’m not as active as a participant I was before. That’s what I’m asking.

Just to pick up on the 13wordstory point – i often forgot this but enjoyed taking part when i remembered. The last prompt I saw was ‘CUMBERSOME’ and for a simple participatory event, the new presentation of the rules was just that and impossible for me to get my head round and understand how to take part in line with the rules. if not before, I’ll be back wednesday with authorstory post – ongoing health challenges so very inactive bloggingwise, across the board. best wishes all 🙂

Piyusha, Let me just say you’re doing a great job, and I can sense your frustration! I think Oneta started a kind of blogging challenge for herself–visiting every single blog represented here. she inspired me when she did that…but I haven’t followed suit!

Maybe it would be a great idea for all of us to visit one BW blog we’ve never been to each week, comment and ‘like’–and maybe reblog a post we really love to give others greater exposure. And mention that reblog here in this forum.

Also, maybe we could each invite a respected blogger to be part of the community.

The weekly features are time-consuming; I know that I try to read people’s posts, but I don’t always get to the features..although I love reading the author bios, for instance, but don’t always get there! Do you think we should rethink them? I like some of the new ideas above; I’d also be interested in seeing members post a link to their favorite blog post in their own blog, and a discussion of why they love that one piece above others…

  I do understand what you mean when you say you don’t always the time to read the posts and features. happens to me too . That’s why if there are more number of people doing it, if one or two missed out, it would still keep the activity alive.
  I guess for a start we could all post more links here and give feedback to each other. That would increase the camaraderie and bonding instantly.
  Invitations to each of our blogging friends is a great idea. I’ve been writing posts here on that. You could reblog those. Here’s the link to one such post.
  About the time-consuming features, we could rethink them sure. Let’s try and keep each of the new features as light as we can. Like the Monday one, I’m thinking of keeping it as an inspirational quote that we could share. It could be something fun or profound to drive away the post weekend Monday blues. Or we could have something travel related but beyond that everyone is free to write what they want. Slowly, all of the features could be replaced by new ones.
