Amur Leopard Population Doubles thanks to Clever Insurance Program

Yesterday I came across an encouraging news report from the Daily Mail. It claims that Amur leopard numbers have more than doubled, partly as the result of a well-run insurance program. This scheme compensates ranchers for livestock lost to the leopard, as long as they don’t kill the cat.

The Amur leopard is one of the most endangered wild felids in the world. As recently as 2007 there were thought to be no more than 30 in the Russian Far East. Now there may be as many as 80.
