Chat Feature Now Available!

I’ve been looking into this for a while now, and I’ve done a bit of research. The limitations of a free WordPress.com account mean that we cannot have something embedded directly into our forum sadly.

I looked into several other services like Chatzy and the like, but most wanted to limit how many people could chat at a time to 10 or so. Perhaps that wouldn’t be a problem for us, but I wasn’t sure. Many others wanted you to create an account with them in order to use it or download special software.

I wanted to try to find a happy medium, and I’m hoping that I’ve done so with our new chat.

It is an IRC chat using a web browser client called Mibbit. That just means that there’s nothing to download or install. Any browser that has Javascript functioning will allow this chat to work.

To join please click on this link.

You’ll see a screen like this:
chatscreen1

Enter in your name (preferably your WordPress username or the display name we’ve come to know or a shortened version of it)

It will load a screen that asks for your name and chat channel. Just ignore that. It’ll load into the chat automatically in a few seconds.
chatscreen2
Ignore this screen and the site will eventually load into the chat.

If you’d like to register your username so no one else can claim it:
Type:
/ns register yourPassword yourEmailAccountName@yourMailProvider
(no nick here, otherwise you’ll get “use a more obscure password” or similar)

If you’d like to PM someone:
Type:
/query Nickname message
Ex:
/query KristinaVanHoose Hello!

or click on their name in the right sidebar and select PM.

If you have any questions, let me know. If you have any technical difficulties with it, let me know too! If this chat does not work for us, I can try another program/chat service.

This will also be added to the FAQ for future reference.
